Steve Kay-Vocals, Bass

Steve Kay was born and raised in and near Seattle, Washington. He was raised in a strong LDS (Mormon) home, with a family history deeply entrenched in the LDS church. Many of Steve’s ancestors were some of the first members of the LDS church, including John Parry, the first conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! Many of these ancestors, including Parry, were active polygamists.
While Steve did not inherit a polygamous lifestyle from ancestors such as Parry, he did inherit a talent and passion for music. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Steve loved singing, taking part in numerous choirs. He also developed a passion for writing music, and began cultivating that skill in his free time. During his two-year mission for the LDS church in Florida, he met some of the other future members of Adam’s Road. Before and after his mission, he spent a total of three years at LDS-church-owned Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He initially studied biology, with the hope of attaining a pre-med degree, and eventually becoming a doctor. But in his third year, he changed his major to Media-Music and was accepted to the BYU School of Music. His new aspiration was to become a commercial songwriter. As a participant in the BYU concert choir for two years, Steve sang bass, and toured the Northwest United States.
While attending BYU, Steve took some mandatory LDS religion courses. They are intended to ground the BYU students in LDS doctrine, and to instill more faith in the Mormon religion. Ironically, these courses had the opposite effect for Steve, and laid the groundwork for his leaving the LDS faith. One of these classes—a church history course—began to expose some of the church’s historical closet skeletons. A New Testament class also brought to light how some points of LDS theology contradicted the Bible, especially how Paul taught in 1 Cor. 7 that marriage was not required (vs. 6-9), or even necessarily beneficial (vs. 25-40). But being a faithful Mormon, Steve pushed these problems out of his thought process, trying to forget them. During the summers, he would fly out to Florida to spend time with the other future members of the Adam’s Road band, some of whom he had grown to be friends with during his LDS mission. These friends, during the 2006 year, were coming to know the Biblical Jesus—and becoming “inactive” Mormons. Noticing their lack of zeal for the LDS religion, his concern for their salvation grew.
His concerns led to questions; and the answers that followed crumbled his religious foundation. A short period of agnosticism ensued. Having felt betrayed and duped by Mormonism, he “threw out the baby with the bathwater” for a time. But to God’s glory he was redirected to the Bible—the actual Word of God. While studying, the Bible came alive. He began to see how plain and precious the gospel of grace really was, that "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). In October of 2006 he gave his life to Jesus Christ, and became a new creation in the Lord. When he found this personal relationship with Jesus as taught in the Bible, he left BYU and the LDS religion to take part in full-time ministry with Adam’s Road, which was formed around the time of his conversion. The ministry made the historic Edgewater Hotel in Winter Garden, Florida its “home base.”
A year into the new life at the Edgewater, Steve took a liking to vacationer and hotel guest Michelle Warren (band member Joseph Warren’s sister). She had also been raised LDS, but came to know the Biblical Jesus in the time after they met. In April of 2009, Steve was married to Michelle. They had their first child, a baby girl named Aleia, on August 5th 2010. Steve loves spending time with his family, and finds joy in life’s simple things. As a history enthusiast, he has particular interest in piracy of the 17th and 18th centuries. He loves studying the Bible, reading, watching movies, and fellowshipping with other believers. Steve praises God for his huge new family—the Body of Christ. He thoroughly enjoys being in the band, and feels immensely blessed to be able to minister the Word of God through music to those trapped in religion, as he once was. On a side note, he has been known to do a mean Elvis impression upon request. Steve loves the Lord and loves sharing the light of Jesus with the world (Eph. 5:8). He hopes to be able to do it for the rest of his life.
