LDS Doctrine Topical Guide

Holy BibleOur ministry created this page to give Christians a topical understanding of what the Bible says about many common subjects that relate to Mormonism. This topical guide serves as an effective tool in finding Biblical references so you can more effectively minister to your LDS friends using God's Holy Word. Click on any subject to see its Biblical references as well as short descriptions* of each passage.

*The LDS church exclusively uses the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible. Certain passages read differently between the KJV and more modern translations. To make this list more effective for ministering, the descriptions of certain verses have been written to reflect the KJV translation and are notated as such.

-Luke 8:13-15

-Eph. 3:21

-2 Thes. 2:1-3

-1 Tim. 4:1

-2 Tim. 4:3-4

Not one iota of the law will pass away until all is accomplished

Many will fall away and betray and hate one another

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away

Parable of Sower, seeds that fall on rock have no root and when tested fall away

To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all generations forever

Second coming is near when the falling away happens

In later times some will depart from the faith

Turn away from the truth with itching ears to teachers that suit their passions

-2 Cor. 3:4-6

Acceptable sacrifice is a broken heart and contrite spirit

Righteous acts are like filthy rags

Righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees

Lord, Lord, look at our mighty works in your name- I never knew you

Those who are sick need a physician; sinners, not righteous are called

Pharisees are like dishes that appear clean, whitewashed tombs

No one is good except God alone

Parable of Pharisee and tax collector

No one is good but God alone

No one is righteous, not even one

Nothing good dwells in our flesh, we are wretched sinners

Zeal not according to knowledge, establishing their own righteousness

We have confidence of sufficiency, not in ourselves, but God

Where two or three are gathered in Jesus’ name He will be there also

A house divided against itself will not be able to stand

One body, many members with different functions

No divisions, united in same mind and judgment

Gifts of Spirit are given as He wills, no part is more important than the others

The church is Christ’s body

One body, one spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism

Christ loved the church, cleanses her by the washing of water with the word

The church is the Body of Christ

-1 Pet. 3:15-16

-Jude 1:3

-Jude 1:22-23

Jesus did not come to bring peace but a sword, dividing families

We fight with divine weapons to demolish strongholds and arguments

Speaking the truth in love

Have nothing to do with works of darkness, but expose them

Our fight is not against flesh and blood, but the powers of darkness

Strive side by side for the faith of the gospel

Rightly handling the word of truth

Not quarrelsome, correcting opponents with gentleness

Scripture for reproof, correction, training

Ready in and out of season to reprove, rebuke, exhort with patience and teaching

Instruct others with sound doctrine and rebuke those who oppose it

Word of God is living, active, sharper than a two-edged sword

Always be prepared to make a defense for the hope in you

Save others by snatching them out of the fire

-Heb. 12:2

Whoever doesn’t take up cross and follow Jesus isn’t worthy

Deny yourself and take up your cross and follow Jesus

Deny yourself and take up your cross and follow Jesus

Deny yourself and take up your cross daily and follow Jesus

He who doesn’t bear his own cross and come after Jesus can’t be His disciple

Cross foolishness to those who are perishing; power of God to those being saved

Through the foolishness of the cross God saved us, we preach Christ crucified

I am crucified with Christ

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord

Jesus reconciled all believers to God through the cross

Jesus was obedient by going to the cross

Walk as enemies of the cross

Jesus made peace through the blood of His cross

Jesus cancelled the debt that opposed us and nailed it to the cross

Christ’s sacrifice on the cross once for all sanctifies us

For the joy that was set before Him Jesus endured the cross

-Isa. 44:6

-Isa. 44:8

-Isa. 45:5

-Phil. 2:6-7

Satan tempted Eve with the false prospect of being like God

Before me no God was formed, neither shall there be any after

I am the first and I am the last, and beside me there is no God

Is there a God beside me?  There is no God; I know not any

I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God

Jesus didn’t count equality with God a thing to be grasped

-James 2:17-18

-James 2:26

-1 Jn. 3:23

-1 Jn. 5:1

-1 Jn. 5:13

He believed God, counted to him as righteousness

Do not fear, only believe

All things are possible for one who believes

Faith can move mountains, ask with faith and you will receive

Whoever does not believe is condemned

God so loved the world…whoever believes has eternal life

Whoever believes in Him is not condemned

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life

Whoever hears God’s word and believes God has eternal life

Work of God is to believe in Jesus Christ

Whoever comes to and believes in the Lord will never hunger or thirst

Will of God that whoever looks on Jesus and believes in Him will have eternal life

Whoever believes has eternal life

If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever

Whoever believes in Jesus:  “Out of him will flow rivers of living waters”

I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me will never die

I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to Father but through me

Eternal life is to know God and Jesus Christ

Everyone who believes receives forgiveness of their sins through Jesus’ name

Believe and be freed from everything from which the law couldn’t set you free

What must I do to be saved?  Believe in Jesus and you will be saved

Gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes

The righteous shall live by faith

Righteousness of God through faith apart from the law

Justified by grace as a gift, received by faith

God is the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus

One is justified by faith apart from works of the law

One who does not work but trusts God:  His faith is counted as righteousness

Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes

Confess with the mouth and believe in the heart and you will be saved

With the heart one believes and is justified, with the mouth one confesses and is saved

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved

Not justified by works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ

Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness

Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith

No one is justified by the law, the righteous shall live by faith

Law was our guardian until Christ came so we might be justified by faith

No longer under a guardian, sons of God through faith

Only faith working through love in Christ Jesus counts for anything

When we believe we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, a guarantee of our inheritance

By grace you have been saved through faith, not of yourselves

Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith

One Lord, one faith, one baptism

Those who believe in Him for eternal life

My righteous one shall live by faith

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, evidence of things not seen

Can faith save that does not produce works?

I will show you my faith by my works

Faith without works is dead

Commandment is to believe in Jesus and love one another

Everyone who believes Jesus is the Christ has been born of God

Those who believe may know they have eternal life

Story of the fall of mankind

I was brought forth in iniquity and conceived in sin

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God

Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin

In Adam all men die, in Christ all are made alive

God cannot tempt anyone but we are tempted by our own desires

Jesus’ coming will be as visible as lightning, all will know

Don’t believe if anyone says they have seen Christ; false christs

People will preach another Jesus

-Gal. 1:6-9

-Eph. 5:11-12

-2 Thes. 2:9-12

-2 Pet. 1:16-17

If anyone brings another Jesus or spirit or gospel you put up with it too easily

Satan appears as an angel of light

Even if an angel from heaven preaches another gospel…

Expose the works of darkness, have no part in them

People refuse to love the truth so God blinds them with a strong delusion

Apostles didn’t follow cleverly devised myths

If a prophet prophesies, and it doesn’t come to pass, he is false

Wolves in sheep’s clothing, know false prophets by their fruits

False prophets will arise and lead many astray

False prophets perform signs and wonders to deceive the elect

All men speak well of false prophets

Don’t be deceived by those claiming to be Christ, or that the time is near

False prophet Bar-Jesus/Elymas

Avoid those who go on in detail about visions, who promote self-made religion

False prophets and teachers bringing in destructive heresies and stories

Test the spirits, many false prophets have gone into the world

Who is my family? Those who do the will of God

Anyone who leaves father or mother will receive a hundredfold

Who is my family? Those who do the will of God

Anyone who leaves house, family, lands, etc. will receive a hundredfold

No one who looks back is fit for serving the kingdom of God

Families will be divided because of Christ

Cannot be Jesus’ disciple unless you hate father, mother, brother and sister

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path

God’s word does not return empty, but accomplishes its purpose

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away

Whoever abides in my word is my disciple and knows the truth and is set free

Study the scriptures to test any message

Faith comes from hearing the message, message comes from the word

All scripture God-breathed and good for teaching, rebuking, etc.

Word of God is living, active, sharper than a two-edged sword

Something more sure, the prophetic word, a lamp in a dark place

Paul’s writings are hard to understand for some, but are still scripture

-James 2:14

-James 3:17

Let your light shine so others may see your good works and glorify God

Do not practice righteousness to be seen by men and glorified

Know a prophet by their fruits.  A bad tree cannot bring good fruit

Kingdom of heaven given to those who produce its fruits

The great commission

Bear fruits in keeping with repentance

Set free to bear fruit for God

Offer your bodies as living sacrifices

I am crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me

Works of the flesh compared to the fruits of the Spirit

God prepared good works for us to do after being saved (see Eph. 2:8-9)

God works to will and work in you for His good pleasure

Bearing fruit in every good work

Be rich in good deeds and generous

Zealous for good works

Devote ourselves to good works

Stir up one another to love and good works

Faith that doesn’t bring good works can’t save anyone

Wisdom from above is full of mercy and good fruits

-Heb. 4:16

Law came through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus

We believe we will be saved through the grace of Jesus Christ

Paul called by Jesus to testify to the gospel of the grace of God

All fallen short of God’s glory, justified by His grace as a gift

One who works his faith is not counted as righteousness but as his due

We have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand

Free gift of grace and salvation through Jesus Christ

Sin has no dominion since we are not under the law but under grace

Wages of sin is death, gift of God is eternal life

If by grace then no longer by works, or grace would not be grace

Christ’s grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect when we are weak

Don’t nullify God’s grace, righteousness doesn’t come through the law

Those who want to be justified by the law are fallen from grace

We have redemption through Jesus’ blood, through the riches of grace

We are saved by grace and not by works, it is a free gift of God

Grace was given to us according to the measure of Christ’s gift

God saved us not by our own works but by grace

God saved us not by works of righteousness, but by His own mercy and grace

Let us with confidence draw near the throne of grace

We have a high priest who understands all our weakness

High priest acted on behalf of God for the people, Jesus our high priest forever

Jesus designated by God to be high priest

Jesus is our forerunner into the holy place as a high priest forever

Many priests replacing each other at death but Jesus lives forever

Jesus always lives to intercede for us, one sacrifice for all eternity

By a single offering He has perfected believers for all time

We enter the holy place with confidence through the blood of Jesus

No one except Jesus has seen God

The invisible things of Him

The invisible God

The King eternal, immortal, invisible

God alone has immortality, dwells in unapproachable light, and no one has seen Him

No one has ever seen God, but God dwells in us when we have love

Become one flesh and shouldn’t divorce except for in cases of adultery

Jesus says it’s okay to renounce marriage for the kingdom of God’s sake

In the resurrection we are neither married nor given in marriage

When they rise from the dead they are neither married nor given in marriage

Those worthy to attain the resurrection are not married or given in marriage

We are bound by marriage only as long as we are alive

Each husband should have his own wife, and each wife her own husband

Better to be single if you can resist the passions of the flesh

Rules for marriage where one spouse is not a believer

Those who are married are distracted from full devotion to God, better to stay single

Rules for marriage:  Wives: submit.  Husbands: love your wife as yourself

I am the first and the last, apart from me there is no God

There is no God apart from me

God fills heaven and earth

I, the Lord, do not change

All things are possible with God

A spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones as Jesus has

Jesus is our Creator, therefore He is not our brother

God is spirit

Immortal God traded for worship of creation, including images of man

There is one God and one Lord Jesus Christ

Christ didn’t count equality with God something to be grasped

Jesus is the image of the invisible God

Jesus created all things

Jesus is the creator and the exact imprint of God’s nature

The Lord created all things, He endures forever

Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever

The father of heavenly lights does not change

-James 2:10

Forget the former ways and see that I am doing a new thing

I have come not to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them

New wine is not put into old wineskins

All the Prophets and the Law prophesied till John

Love God, love your neighbor-these two sum up the Law and Prophets

Law and Prophets until John, then the good news of the kingdom

Law came through Moses, grace and truth through Jesus

Circumcision a must to keep the law

It is finished

By Jesus everyone who believes is freed from law of Moses

Apostles decide the law does not apply to Gentiles, all are saved by faith

Jews accuse Paul of persuading people to worship contrary to the law

Paul taught Jews to forsake Moses and Jewish customs

What the law says it says to those who are under the law

Law and Prophets bear witness of the righteousness of God apart from the law

We no longer boast in ourselves, because we are under the law of faith

Justified by faith apart from works of the law

The promise to Abraham came not through the law, but faith

We are not under the law but under grace

We have died to the law through the body of Christ

We serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code

The law gives power to sin, which leads to death

God has done what the law could not do, by sending Jesus as a sacrifice for sin

Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes

Love fulfills the law

Paul, though born a Jew, was no longer under the law

We are not justified by works of the law, but by faith

If righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose

Does the Spirit come by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

Are miracles done by works of the law or by hearing with faith?

If you rely on works of the law you are under a curse

No one is justified before God by the law

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us

Reason for the law being given.  We are linked to Abraham’s blessing by faith

If we keep one part of the old law we are bound to keep the rest

We are severed from Christ if we try to be justified by the law

Law is fulfilled in one word: Love your neighbor as yourself

If you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law

Fulfill the law of Christ by bearing one another’s burdens

Jesus abolished the law of commandments expressed in ordinances to make peace

Not having righteousness of my own through the law, but through faith in Christ

Law was not given for the just, but the unjust

When the priesthood changed, there was a change in the law

The law appointed men in weakness, but the later word appoints Jesus

We are under a better covenant than the old law, with Christ mediating

There is need for a second covenant, because the first had faults

Law is written on our hearts

The first covenant (old law) has become obsolete and is ready to disappear

Description of old law, way into the holy place not yet opened

Christ fulfills the requirements of the old law, redeems us, purifies our conscience

The death of the one who made the will must be established before it’s in effect

Old law required purification by blood, Jesus sacrificed once for all to put away sin

Old law could never make perfect those who draw near

Christ offers sacrifice once for all, perfecting believers for all time

We enter the holy place with confidence through the blood of Jesus

If you fail at one point of the law, you are condemned by all of it

Ordinances

-Eph. 2:14-16

-Col. 2:13-14

-James 5:12

New covenant abolishes law of commandments and ordinances

Jesus blotted out handwriting of ordinances, nailing it to the cross (KJV)

Do not make any oaths, let your yes be yes, and no be no

The seventy-two provided for by believers, laborer deserves his wages

The widow’s mite

Those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the Gospel

Paul’s right in the gospel was to be supported financially for ministering

Paul accepted support from other churches

If taught the word then share all good things with the one who teaches

Philippians sent Paul gifts when he was in need

Paul had the right to be fed and taken care of by the Body of Christ

The laborer is worthy of his reward

Shepherd the flock willingly, and not for the purpose of getting shameful gain

The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom

Apostles, prophets, evangelists, etc.  No earthly high priests in New Testament church

Fix thoughts on Jesus, our apostle and high priest

We have a high priest who understands all our weakness

Salvation not attainable through the Levitical priesthood

Jesus our high priest forever because He has eternal life

We enter the holy place through the body of Jesus

Living stones built as a spiritual house, all believers are a royal priesthood

If a prophet leads you after other Gods he will be put to death (Eternal Progression)

If a prophet makes false prophecy, he is false (Independence Temple, etc.)

One who trusts in man and turns away from the Lord will live in a salt land in the desert

Beware false prophets who say they have seen Jesus (First Vision)

Secret chambers/inner rooms in desert/wilderness (SLC Temple)

Proclaims another Jesus (brother of Satan) or a different gospel (works before grace)

False apostles pretend to be righteous, Satan disguises himself as angel of light (Moroni)

Even if an angel from heaven (Moroni) brings another gospel, do not believe it

Dietary laws (Word of Wisdom), details about visions (First Vision, Moroni, etc.)

In later times, some will devote themselves to deceitful spirits

Teaches different doctrine that doesn’t agree with the teachings of the Lord

Those who do not endure sound doctrine have teachers to teach what they want to hear

Apostles did not follow cleverly devised myths

False prophets and teachers bringing in destructive heresies

The ignorant and unstable twist the scriptures to their own destruction

Test those who call themselves apostles and are not

Those who are of the synagogue of Satan, those who claim to be Jews but are not

Old Testament prophets say “Thus says the Lord”

Old Testament prophets say “Thus says the Lord”

Came not to abolish but fulfill Law and Prophets

The Prophets and the Law prophesied until John

On the greatest commandments hang all the Law and Prophets

Law and Prophets prophesied until John: now the Gospel is preached

God will pour out His spirit on all people, sons and daughters prophesy

Traveling group of New Testament prophets, prophesy by the Spirit

NT prophets who say “Thus says the Holy Spirit”

Law and Prophets bear witness to the righteousness of God apart from the Law

God appointed first apostles, second prophets…

Rules for NT prophecy:  Let 2 or 3 prophets speak, then test what is said

Built on foundation of apostles and prophets, Christ the chief cornerstone

Gave apostles and prophets for the building up of the body, unity of faith in Jesus

God in past spoke by the prophets, now has spoken through His Son

Prophecy of scripture comes through Holy Spirit, not from private interpretation

Water Jesus gives will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life

Whoever hears God’s word and believes God has eternal life

Will of God that whoever looks on Jesus and believes in Him will have eternal life

Whoever believes has eternal life

If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever

Whoever drinks the blood and eats the flesh of Jesus has eternal life

We know Jesus’ voice and no one can snatch us out of His hand

Eternal life is to know the only true God and Jesus whom He has sent

Believe in the Lord and you will be saved

The gospel is the power of God for salvation to all those who believe will be saved

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, justified by grace as a gift

Justified by faith apart from the law

God shows His love for us in that while we were sinners Christ died for us

Confess with your mouth and believe in your heart and you will be saved

Everything is imprisoned under sin so that those who believe will be saved

We were dead in our sins but God rich in mercy made us alive with Christ

By grace you have been saved through faith

He saved us not because of our righteousness, but His mercy

God fills heaven and earth, a temple cannot contain Him

Who is able to build God a house?

God fills heaven and earth, does not dwell in a house on earth with man

God fills heaven and earth, what house will you build for Him?

Something (Jesus) greater than the temple is here

Where two or three gather together, there I am

Temple veil torn from top to bottom at Jesus’ death

Temple veil torn from top to bottom at Jesus’ death

Every stone of the temple will be thrown down

Temple veil torn from top to bottom at Jesus’ death

True worshippers don’t worship in a temple, but worship in spirit and truth

Jesus said nothing in secret

Stephen says Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands

Paul says the Lord does not live in temples made by hands

We are God’s temple and His spirit is within us

Body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you

We are the temple of the living God

Body of Christ grows into a holy temple in the Lord

Jesus enters into a greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands

Believers are living stones being built up as a spiritual house

No temple in the New Jerusalem, temple is the Lord God

There is a way that seems right to a man, but leads to death

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path

The heart is deceitful above all things

Jesus tests the devil’s temptations with the scriptures

Out of the heart comes evil thoughts, false witness, deceit

Out of the heart comes evil thoughts, false witness, deceit

Examining the scriptures daily to see if what Paul said was true

Faith comes from hearing the message, message comes from the word

Test everything, hold fast what is good

Deceitful spirits will cause some to fall away

Continue in what you have learned from the scriptures

Test the spirits, many false prophets have gone into the world

Do not get drunk with wine

Let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink

-1 Jn. 2:3-6

Lord, Lord, did we not do many works?  I never knew you

What are the works of God?  Believe in Jesus

If you love me, you will keep my commandments

Whoever has my commandments and keeps them loves me

If anyone loves me he will keep my word

If we remain in Christ we will produce fruit, apart from Him we can do nothing

A Jew is one inwardly not merely outwardly

Justified by faith not works of law

To the one who works his wages are his due, not a gift

Should we sin because we’re under grace? No! We are slaves of righteousness

Set free to bear fruit for God

Salvation depends not on human will or exertion but on God’s mercy

If we’re saved by grace then it’s not of works or grace would cease to be grace

Offer your bodies as living sacrifices

Who serves Christ is acceptable to God

By works of the law no one will be justified

Christ lives in me, life is now lived through faith

Called to be free, do not use it to live for sin

Created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared

If we keep on sinning, no sacrifice for sins is left

Faith without works is dead

We have to come to know Him when we obey His commands
